The pattern on this is adapted from Adolf Schmidt’s Atlas der Diatomaceenkunde (1890). The book, in public domain, contains many illustrations of diatoms, which are algae. Algae live everywhere: in salt, brackish, or fresh water, as well as in soils. Their cell walls, or frustules, are made of silica and produce an amazing array of textures and patterns that they are so well known for.
